Ebook About
This gripping inspirational memoir grapples with the tension between faith and science—and between death and hope—as a seasoned neurosurgeon faces insurmountable odds and grief both in the office and at home.WINNER OF THE CHRISTIAN BOOK AWARD® • “Beautiful, haunting, powerful . . .”—Daniel G. Amen, MDDr. W. Lee Warren, a practicing brain surgeon, assumed he knew most outcomes for people with glioblastoma, head injuries, and other health-care problems. Yet even as he tried to give patients hope, his own heart would sink as he realized, I've seen the end of you.But it became far more personal when the acclaimed doctor experienced an unimaginable family tragedy. That's when he reached the end of himself.Page-turning medical stories serve as the backdrop for a raw, honest look at how we can remain on solid ground when everything goes wrong and how we can find light in the darkest hours of life. I've Seen the End of You is the rare book that offers tender empathy and tangible hope for those who are suffering. No matter what you're facing, this doesn't have to be the end. Even when nothing seems to makes sense, God can transform your circumstances and your life. And he can offer a new beginning.

Book I've Seen the End of You: A Neurosurgeon's Look at Faith, Doubt, and the Things We Think We Know Review :

Have you ever read a book that impacted you so much that it took a few days to digest after you were through reading it? That is how Dr. W. Lee Warren’s “I Have Seen the Last of You” affected me. While I found it an emotional read at times, every instance of doubt and each heart-rending memory is countered by a story of hope. Warren takes the reader through the journey of his life as a Christian neurosurgeon. He shares just enough about his profession for you to realize he is utterly brilliant at what he does but he is also able to explain the intricacies of the brain in a straightforward manner that does not lose the non-medical reader. In addition, great quotes, a sense of humor and top-notch editing make for a smooth and satisfying read.Though a man of faith, Dr. Warren has struggled with said faith at times due to the constant devastation wrought by the terminal brain tumors he witnesses in his practice. Do not despair, because Warren has been fortunate to have the right people in his life at the right time to help him through and a consolidation of their insights has shown him a different path.If you or a loved one is facing an insurmountable health issue or if life has been one beat down after another there is something positive here for you. If you feel drained of all energy and emotion and feel like you cannot take another step, this book will touch you as it tells the stories of others who have been where you are and how their personal perspectives made all the difference in their circumstances. Warren recounts his own moments of weakness and the pain of his personal experiences in order to share how he learned to see things through a different lens. The key to God’s peace and a faith-based hope is right in front of us if we know which lens to look through and if we are using the right map.I did not receive a free copy of this book. I paid for it and would purchase it again. Kudos, W. Lee Warren!
I read a lot. My average is about 50 books a year that cover all different genres. Some of the writing is really good; some leaves much to be desired. Always, when I’m nearing a wonderful book, I feel myself getting anxious. “Will this author stick the landing, or will he lose control of his book?” Sometimes, authors “nail” it. Sometimes, the ending is a massive disappointment. What sets Dr. Warren’s book apart from other books is that his stories start with the ending, which is oftentimes just the beginning.I’m so grateful that he took the time to write so openly and honestly about his experiences. After I purchased the book, I made myself a hot cup of tea and sat down. Four hours later, my lovely cup of ripe Puerh had grown cold, and I was still immersed in the book. I couldn’t put it down! I am currently reading 19 books, and I like them all but none are compelling the way this one was. I read until after 1:00 a.m.And, yes, the author “stuck the landing.”The stories this surgeon chose to write about are riveting. His sincerity comes out on every page. It is unlike any other book I’ve ever read. The author writes of his experiences as a trauma surgeon during his military service to our country. He relives the pain of losing his patients. He speaks earnestly about not giving up or giving in – even when it seems to be the far easier course of action.5 stars? No, this is worth infinitely more than just 5 stars. If you’re hurting or grieving, if you are at a point in life where nothing makes sense anymore, or you are fascinated by the inner workings of the human brain, this book might be a good one for you. What touched me also was the hand extended to him by another great author: Philip Yancey. It did my heart good to read about the encouragement Dr. Warren received from Mr. Yancey in his fledgling writing attempts. I have read several of Mr. Yancey’s books but always come home to my favorite: What’s So Amazing About Grace? The takeaway here is that there is hope…there is always hope ~How about a couple of quotes from the book? From page 45: “Doubt is not the absence of faith. You can doubt and believe at the same time. I do – every day.”From page 208: “Death is not a gentleman.”From page 208: “Grief ravages the spirit and the body as surely as cancer or heart disease, but there is no tumor or clogged artery to cut out, stent open, or otherwise repair. The patient is at the mercy of the disease, for no cure exists.”From page 245: “Faith, my friend, is being able to look for hope even when it seems impossible to find. Faith is hope waiting for tomorrow.”From page 254: “Doubt is not fatal if we recognize it for what it is: a smudge on the lens. When we realize that, wipe it clear, and put the glasses back on, we’ll be okay.”May you be encouraged today ~
